3.2- Experience in Battlegrounds…wut?!?

I was surprised this past week to see the release of a new PTR(3.2) and patch notes.  I’m going to take some time to review a few of the upcoming addition and changes.  First will be the addition of experience to Battlegrounds.

  • Players will now be awarded experience for completing objectives and actions that yield honor in Battlegrounds (honorable kills will not be included).
  • Players who do not wish to gain experience through pvp can visit Behsten in Stormwind or Slahtz in Orgrimmar- both located near the Battlemasters in either city -and turn off all experience accumulation for the cost of 10 gold.
  • Disabling experience gains will prevent a player from gaining experience through any means available in game.
  • Players with experience gains turned off who compete in Battlegrounds will face off only against other players with experience gains turned off.
  • Behsten and Slahtz can reinstate experience gain for players, for a 10 gold fee of course.  Any experience that would’ve been accumulated if experience gains were enabled cannot be recovered.

Okay looking at that from being a level 80 feral it seems to have no problems, but as you’ve read I have quite a few alts(including a new feral).  For me this brings back the idea of twinking.  You may hate it or you may be indifferent.  Personally, I like twinking because there is only a one time gearing fee(unless as Blizz has done in removing enchants etc).  I also loved the sense of community I found in the twinking community.  Unlike 80 pvp where everyone’s out for themseleves twinks actually work together and understand that when one improves all benefit.  And the stereotype of twinks just camping lower levels and undergeared players just that, a stereotype.  Most twinks I know enjoy a full twink battle more than having to deal with a bunch of unorganized non-twinks.  I really don’t know how much I will twink, but it’s nice to have the option to turn off xp and gear up without worries of hitting 30, 40, etc.

Not only does this open twinking it allows for a break from questing and still obtaining experience on my alts.  To all of you thinking about leveling strictly through battlegrounds be prepared for two things.  One, being camped by higher level non-twink characters.  I mean how is a level 10 supposed to compete with a level 19?  Unless that level 19 doesn’t know how to press buttons killing a level 10 will be very easy.  Secondly be prepared for slower experience gains than you would see from quests.  Blizzard has stated in blue posts that this way of leveling will most likely not be as quick as questing normally.  It’s no surprise as Blizzard has said they want everyone to see the game content.   If someone is in battlegrounds from levels 10 to 80 he will most likely not know any of the content or understand how to play his class properly in any pve content.

Overall this upcoming change is a good one as it will remove many of the twinks that supposedly grieve lower levels so much and add a much needed break from questing for leveling characters.  At 10 gold this is a relatively cheap change and I find little to complain about outside of the level x0-x6 players that will most likely make winning some battlegrounds very hard.   I look forward to be able to level through battlegrounds and hope you will do the same.

Cheers!
